Heartbreaking Mid-Sea Attacks Leave 11 Nagapattinam Fishermen Injured: A Call for Urgent Action
In a disturbing turn of events, 11 fishermen from Nagapattinam district sustained injuries after allegedly being attacked mid-sea by unidentified individuals, suspected to be from Sri Lanka. The incidents occurred on Sunday night, October 5, 2025, in waters east of Kodiyakarai.
According to sources from the Coastal Security Group (CSG), the first incident involved six fishermen from Nambiyar Nagar, who departed in a registered fibre boat around 2 p.m. While fishing at approximately 8 p.m., they encountered a group of eight men who approached in two boats. Eyewitness reports indicate that these assailants boarded the fishermen’s vessel armed with iron rods, wooden logs, and knives. In a violent confrontation, the group not only inflicted injuries on the local fishermen but also made off with valuable belongings, including a silver chain, an engine, a mobile phone, a GPS device, a light battery, and a walkie-talkie.
The injured fishermen, identified as S. Vignesh (28), S. Vimal (26), S. Sugumar (31), V. Thirumurugan (31), V. Murugan (38), and P. Arun (27), returned to shore early Monday morning and were admitted to the Government Medical College Hospital in Nagapattinam for treatment.
In a separate incident on the same day, five fishermen also from Nambiyar Nagar were fishing on an unregistered fibre boat when they were reportedly attacked by another group of eight individuals, suspected to be from Sri Lanka. This group stolen an engine, a GPS gadget, five mobile phones, and a hefty fishing net weighing around 500 kg, further underscoring the rising tensions at sea. The injured fishermen in this case were M. Sasikumar (30), S. Udaysankar (28), S. Sivasankar (25), M. Kriba (29), and R. Kamlesh (19). While one fisherman was transferred to Thanjavur for specialized treatment, the other four continue to receive care at the Nagapattinam medical facility.
These alarming incidents highlight ongoing concerns about safety for fishermen operating in disputed waters, particularly in regions near the maritime border with Sri Lanka. Authorities are urged to increase surveillance and protect local fishermen who often operate under precarious circumstances. The community and their families are left grappling with the consequences of such violence, which not only endangers lives but also threatens their livelihood.
As investigations continue, the CSG and local authorities are expected to intensify efforts to address these incidents and ensure the safety of those dependent on fishing for their survival. The local community calls for greater protection against these attacks, which have become all too frequent in recent months.
Continued vigilance and support are essential to safeguard the fishermen in Nagapattinam, who face threats while pursuing their daily work in the challenging waters off the Tamil Nadu coast.
