The police in Kerala have launched a vigorous crackdown on illegal single-digit lottery operations in Kozhikode district, deploying specialized teams for surprise inspections. This initiative comes after confidential alerts from the State Lottery Department and licensed lottery agents, who expressed growing concerns about unregulated lottery activities proliferating in the area.
Under the command of Deputy SP Chandramohan from Thamarassery, one of the newly formed inspection squads recently targeted two shops in Ambayathode. During their operation, officials confiscated ₹23,020 believed to be connected to the illegal lottery business. Additionally, several mobile phones were seized, which are suspected to have facilitated unlawful transactions. Authorities plan to conduct forensic analyses on these devices to uncover further evidence.
The inspections, which took place at four different locations simultaneously, were instigated by a confidential complaint from local authorities about the illicit lottery activities. The police predominantly focused on establishments that were reportedly operating outside the legal framework governing lottery sales.
Officials from the Lottery Department have previously raised alarms over the detrimental effects of illegal lotteries on the revenue generated from sanctioned lottery sales. These legal channels adhere to strict regulations, while unregulated systems pose significant risks to the public, including the potential for fraud and the absence of legal recourse in disputes. “The single-digit lottery trade is a gambling practice where participants wager on a single digit from 0 to 9, hoping for a cash prize if their chosen number is drawn,” explained a representative from the Lottery Department. A senior police officer involved in the recent inspections has assured the public that this enforcement effort will expand in the coming weeks, with additional squads set to join the initiative.
