South American country Peru holds the title for the largest silver reserves globally, boasting approximately 140,000 metric tons (MT) of silver. This significant reserve makes Peru a leader in silver mining, with the Antamina mine in the Huari province being the largest silver-producing site in the country. Following Peru, Russia ranks second with silver reserves totaling 92,000 MT. Despite facing geopolitical tensions and sanctions, Russia continues to maintain a robust position in the global silver mining industry.
China comes in third with 70,000 MT of silver reserves. The Ying mining area in Henan Province is recognized as the largest silver-producing region in China. In addition to silver, China dominates the market for rare earth metals, making it a key player in the precious metals sector. Poland secures the fourth position in silver reserves at 61,000 MT, with its silver industry centered around KGHM, a major mining company.
Mexico rounds out the top five silver-producing countries with 37,000 MT of silver reserves. The Penasquito mine, located in Zacatecas, is noteworthy as Mexico’s second-largest mine for silver production and ranks fifth globally. Apart from these leading nations, other countries with considerable silver reserves include Australia (27,000 MT), Chile (26,000 MT), the United States (23,000 MT), Bolivia (22,000 MT), and India, which has 8,000 MT of silver. Collectively, the world’s total silver reserves are estimated at around 550,000 MT. The significant presence of silver in these countries underlines the metal’s value not only for jewelry and investment but also for its industrial applications in electronics, renewable energy, and water purification. Silver’s high electrical and thermal conductivity, along with its antibacterial properties, contributes to its ongoing demand in various sectors.
