Sunjay Kapur’s unexpected death has sent shockwaves through his family, igniting discussions not only about his legacy but also about his relationships. The former chairman of Sona Comstar passed away earlier this year, leaving behind a fortune estimated at Rs 30,000 crore. In a revealing interview, his sister Mandira Kapur Smith spoke candidly about the dynamics within the family, particularly regarding his third wife, Priya Sachdev.
During her conversation with journalist Vickey Lalwani, Mandira disclosed her discontent regarding Priya’s involvement with Sunjay while he was still married to Karisma Kapoor, whom she affectionately referred to as Lolo. “I wasn’t happy about it,” she expressed. Mandira emphasized the perceived insensitivity of another woman intruding upon a marriage, especially when a child was involved, stating, “To come and disrupt a family is in bad taste.”
She further asserted that it was wrong for anyone to dismantle a marriage, particularly one where Karisma was diligently trying to make her relationship work. “You don’t destroy a marriage. Lolo did not deserve that. She did not deserve what came to her,” Mandira lamented.
Discussing Sunjay and Priya’s marriage, Mandira shared that not a single family member supported their union. “Nobody stood by them getting married. Nobody stood by them. I did it because I love my brother,” she revealed. While Kapur’s mother, Rani, lived with him, she reportedly opposed Priya’s fast-tracked appointment to the Sona Comstar board.
Following Sunjay’s passing, Rani allegedly took actions that strained family relations, such as preventing him from seeing his children with Karisma and concealing certain assets. This turmoil arose just as the family was grappling with their loss, further complicating the already fraught family dynamics surrounding Sunjay’s legacy.
