Kuki-Zo Community Celebrates 29th Separation Day with Urgent Call for Autonomy
The Kuki-Zo community commemorated the 29th Separation Day on October 3 at the Martyr’s Cemetery Phaijang in the Sadar Hills of Kangpokpi District. The event showcased their enduring demand for a separate administration from Manipur, coupled with a 12-hour total shutdown and solemn observances.
Floral tributes and gun salutes marked the occasion, during which the Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) urged the community’s ten MLAs to continue their boycott of the Manipur Legislative Assembly until the Government of India addresses their political concerns. CoTU reiterated an eight-point resolution established on the 22nd Remembrance Day, emphasizing that “no Kuki Zo would remain complacent in our movement until our political aspirations are fulfilled by the Government of India.”
This resolution lays out several non-negotiable demands, including the declaration that there will be no free movement for the Meitei community in areas inhabited by Kuki-Zo people. The community strives to achieve its goal of separate administration through democratic means.
Leaders stressed that Kuki-Zo representatives should not engage with Meitei-dominated political platforms or the state government for personal benefit. They criticized the Governor of Manipur’s dialogue with the Arambai Tenggol, suggesting it legitimizes radical groups and strengthens calls for buffer zones between communities.
The resolution also tackled security issues, insisting that any arrests of village volunteers must lead to their safe and unconditional release. CoTU dismissed what they termed “forced normalisations” through people-to-people contact or dialogue initiatives until security concerns and discriminatory policies are adequately resolved.
Significantly, the gathering asserted: “At no point should Kuki-Zo individuals, leaders, or organizations ever delegitimize or compromise the demand for Separate Administration under Article 329A of the Constitution of India, preferably in the form of a Union Territory with Legislature or nothing else.”
The Committee on Tribal Unity issued a stern warning to community members against engaging with what it characterized as “predators of our women; mythomaniacs, infidels, and perpetrators of mass genocide of the Kuki-Zo until the right time to engage with them.”
