Tech Industry Shock: Another Giant’s Layoffs Unveiled After Microsoft and Meta
American tech giant Google has once again laid off hundreds of employees as the company shifts its focus toward artificial intelligence (AI) to cut costs. Reports indicate that over 100 employees in design roles within its cloud division have been affected. The layoffs have notably impacted the “Quantitative User Experience Research” and “Platform and Service Experience” teams, which are crucial for understanding user behavior and integrating that data into product development.
Google has reduced the workforce in its cloud design teams by as much as 50% in some instances, with the majority of layoffs occurring in the United States. The company has reportedly given affected employees until December to secure new positions within the organization.
This move aligns with Google’s rapid transition toward AI; it has been offering voluntary retirement packages to personnel in various U.S. units since early 2025. Layoffs extend beyond design teams, affecting several divisions, including HR, hardware, advertising, search, finance, and commerce. Managers overseeing smaller teams have also faced termination, while employees are encouraged to further integrate AI into their roles.
CEO Sundar Pichai has signaled this is part of a long-term strategy, stating that the company must become “more efficient than ever.” With significant investments in AI infrastructure, Google aims to stay ahead of competitors like Microsoft and Meta.
Google is not alone in this trend; Microsoft previously laid off 9,000 employees in July, while Meta has been executing phased layoffs since 2023. In India, Tata Consultancy Services (TCS) recently announced layoffs affecting approximately 12,000 employees, around 2% of its workforce.
These layoffs echo a broader trend in the tech industry as companies strive to become more streamlined and responsive to market demands while embracing technological advancements.
