Bihar’s Final Voter List Released: 47 Lakh Names Excluded!
The Election Commission released the final voter list on Tuesday after completing a rigorous review process ahead of the Bihar Legislative Assembly elections, revealing that approximately 4.7 million names have been removed from the rolls. This information was provided by the Chief Electoral Officer of Bihar, who also indicated that voters can check the list published on September 30 by visiting the commission’s website.
As of June 24, the number of voters in Bihar stood at 78.9 million. After the initial draft list was published, which saw over 6.5 million names removed, the voter count was reduced to 72.4 million. Following claims and objections, 21.53 lakh new names were added, but 3.66 lakh names were subsequently removed.
The final voter count by September 30 is recorded at 74.2 million. Notably, Patna district was the only area to see an increase in voter numbers. The draft list in August had 4,651,694 voters in Patna, which rose to 4,815,294 after the review, marking an increase of 163,600 voters.
Opposition parties have raised concerns over the significant removals, alleging a systematic disenfranchisement of poor and minority voters. Congress leader Rahul Gandhi and RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav have referred to this process as “vote theft,” and they have jointly initiated a “Vote Rights March.”
This matter is currently being heard in the Supreme Court, where Justices Surya Kant and Joymalya Bagchi have stated that if discrepancies are proven, the commission will not hesitate to annul the voter list. They emphasized that there should be an inclusion of voters rather than a mass exclusion. The next hearing in this case is scheduled for October 7.
Meanwhile, the BJP and Home Minister Amit Shah have supported the review process, claiming it has removed the names of “intruders” from the voter list, an action they argue the opposition “India” alliance is trying to protect.
It has been announced that Chief Election Commissioner Rajeev Kumar and two other officials will visit Bihar on October 4-5. Prior to that, a meeting of election observers will take place in Delhi on October 3. Sources indicate that the election schedule may be announced between October 6 and 7. It is important to note that the current term of the Bihar Legislative Assembly will conclude on November 22.
