Vietnam Faces Impending Typhoon: Urgent Evacuations and Airport Closures
Vietnam is on high alert as Typhoon Bualoi approaches the central coast, prompting the evacuation of 250,000 residents. The Vietnamese government has dispatched around 100,000 military personnel to facilitate the evacuation process. With wind speeds reaching 130 km/h, the storm is forecasted to make landfall later today, marking the tenth typhoon to strike the country this year.
The Vietnam Meteorology Agency described Bualoi as a rapidly moving storm with strong intensity and a wide impact area. It warned that the typhoon could trigger multiple natural disasters at once, including heavy rainfall, flooding, flash floods, landslides, and intense winds.
Prime Minister Pham Minh Chinh has urged for the “highest level of readiness” as the storm approaches. In response to the impending threat, authorities have closed four major airports and ordered fishing boats to return to harbor.
Reports indicate that three fishermen from Ho Chi Minh City are currently missing after one of their vessels sank and another became incapacitated due to large waves off Quang Tri Province. Eight other fishermen have been rescued, with their stranded boats located about 1.5 kilometers from the mouth of the Cua Viet Channel.
In Da Nang, the country’s largest city, more than 210,000 residents are being relocated to safer areas, while approximately 32,000 people in Hue, situated near coastal regions, are also being evacuated. Local officials in Da Nang have mobilized over 200 workers armed with trucks, rocks, sand, bamboo stakes, and sandbags to strengthen coastal defenses before the storm’s arrival.
