Netanyahu Stands Firm at UNGA: Our Mission in Gaza is Far from Over
In a fiery address at the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Friday, Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu discussed the ongoing conflict in Gaza and defended Israel against international criticism. He asserted that Israel is “not done yet” in its military efforts against Hamas, despite claims that the group has been weakened. Netanyahu warned that Hamas still poses a significant threat and has vowed to replicate the attacks that occurred on October 7.
Netanyahu emphasized that Israel’s recovery from what he termed its “darkest day” was due to the determination of its people, the bravery of its soldiers, and decisive leadership. “Thanks to these factors, Israel has staged one of the most remarkable military comebacks in history. But, we’re not done yet,” he stated.
In response to the ongoing violence, Hamas claimed that it is still seeking a resolution to end the conflict. Recently, some of its negotiators were attacked while meeting in Qatar to discuss a U.S.-backed ceasefire initiative. The group insisted that it has never impeded efforts to reach a peace agreement.
While several countries, including the UK, France, Australia, and Canada, have recognized Palestine as a state, the focus on a ceasefire dominated this year’s UN General Assembly. However, Netanyahu dismissed calls for a ceasefire, suggesting that many world leaders who publicly criticize Israel appreciate its role in combating terrorism.
“The very leaders who condemn us in public thank us in private,” he remarked, highlighting the value placed on Israel’s intelligence operations, which he claims have thwarted numerous terrorist attacks across the globe.
Netanyahu also rejected a recent UN Human Rights Council report accusing Israel of committing genocide in Gaza, describing the allegations as “false.” He posed a rhetorical question to the Assembly: “Would a country committing genocide plead with civilians to evacuate for their safety?” He reiterated accusations that Hamas uses civilians as human shields, a claim that human rights advocates have repeatedly challenged, arguing that such justifications do not legitimize attacks on civilian structures.
