SIT Issues Summons to Shyamkanu and 12 Others in Zubeen Case
The Assam Police Special Investigation Team (SIT) has summoned Shyamkanu Mahanta, the organizer of the North East India Festival in Singapore, Siddharth Sarma, manager of the late cultural icon Zubeen Garg, and an employee from a Mumbai talent management company, among 11 others, as part of the ongoing investigation into the singer’s death. This update was confirmed by MP Gupta, the special director general of the Criminal Investigation Department (CID), who oversees the nine-member SIT formed last Wednesday under DGP Harmeet Singh, following directives from Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.
The summoned individuals are required to present themselves before the SIT within 10 days. The SIT conducted searches at Sarma’s residence in Dhirenpara on Thursday and Mahanta’s home in Geetnagar on Friday, although police reported they did not find either of the accused at those locations. In a related development, members of the Assamese film community, including artist and doctor Hitesh Baruah, along with actors Jatia Bora and Ravi Sharma, filed a new FIR against Mahanta and Sarma on Friday. Zubeen Garg, who was a prominent playback singer, had collaborated with these actors in various successful films.
Bora stated, “Each and everyone has extended support to our decision. Justice must be provided.” A total of 55 FIRs have been lodged at different police stations across the state, accusing Mahanta, Sarma, and two others-Shekhar Jyoti Goswami, a drummer in Zubeen’s band, and Sanjive Narain, a local TV channel owner. These FIRs were consolidated into a single case by the CID. Following the direction of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, DGP Harmeet Singh established the SIT to ensure a transparent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Zubeen’s death.
On Friday, the All Assam Lawyers’ Association (AALA) announced that the legal community would not defend the accused in Zubeen’s case. General Secretary Dipak Kumar Das stated that this decision was made as a social responsibility, emphasizing the necessity to uncover the truth surrounding Zubeen’s unexpected passing in Singapore on September 19.
Additionally, Chief Minister Sarma held a meeting with Jorhat district commissioner Jay Shivani and other stakeholders on Friday to plan the rituals for Zubeen, which are scheduled to take place in his hometown on the 13th day after his death. Discussions also included the future establishment of a memorial that would honor Zubeen’s life and contributions.
