Walong Memorial Honors 1962 Heroes, Revives Historical Tourism Interest
The Indian Army is preparing for a month-long series of events at the Walong War Memorial in Arunachal Pradesh’s Anjaw district to commemorate the 63rd anniversary of the historic Battle of Walong, one of the fiercest confrontations during the 1962 India-China war. This initiative aims to promote war tourism in the remote border district, which shares borders with both China and Myanmar. Earlier this month, on September 7, Chief Minister Pema Khandu visited the Helmet Post near Walong to pay his respects to the soldiers who sacrificed their lives in this significant battle.
The Helmet Post memorial is named after a haunting discovery made in 1986, when a soldier’s remains and 24 helmets were found by the Border Roads Organisation. Since then, it has become a symbol of sacrifice and bravery. Khandu referred to the site as “a lasting symbol of courage” and honored Lt Bikram Singh of the 6 Kumaon Regiment, calling him the “unsung hero of Walong.”
The Battle of Walong, fought from October 22 to November 16, 1962, is renowned for the extraordinary resistance displayed by Indian troops of the 11 Infantry Brigade, particularly the 6 Kumaon and 4 Dogra regiments, against a larger Chinese force. Military historians regard Walong as a unique front where Indian soldiers not only held their positions but also launched successful counterattacks.
“The courage of our soldiers at Walong continues to inspire generations, and it is our duty to preserve their legacy,” Khandu emphasized, highlighting Arunachal Pradesh’s importance as India’s “first line of defence.”
Additionally, Anjaw Deputy Commissioner Millo Kojin announced plans for a Sunrise Festival in December at Dong Valley and Walong, areas known for receiving the first rays of sunlight in India. This event is part of broader efforts to enhance tourism in the region.
