Meghalaya’s Haunting Drama ‘Moon’ Set to Shine at Busan Project Market
Shillong-based filmmaker Pradip Kurbah is set to debut his latest feature, Moon, at the Asian Project Market (APM) during the ongoing Busan International Film Festival. Produced by Shankar Lall Goenka in collaboration with several production partners, the film illustrates Kurbah’s consistent focus on narratives rooted in Meghalaya.
Moon is a psychological drama that delves into themes of memory, guilt, and the subtle fractures within families. The story unfolds against the backdrop of the misty hills of Meghalaya and the vibrant streets of Delhi, following two individuals who return to their hometowns after experiencing trauma. A man returns to his village haunted by past violence, while a woman faces the consequences of abuse before reconnecting with a family that raised her as a boy. Their lives intersect amid rain-soaked landscapes, unveiling delicate connections shaped by unresolved trauma.
In an interview, Kurbah reveals that the film was inspired by the “everyday grief and unfinished lives” he observed in Meghalaya. “I wanted to tell a story where silences speak, where the past sits heavy, but small moments of love and memory still exist,” he explained. He also highlighted the film’s landscape: “The rain serves as more than mere weather-it reflects the characters’ emotions. The mist, forests, and grey skies evolve with the narrative, expressing feelings beyond words.”
APM, recognized as Asia’s first investment and co-production market, aims to connect promising film projects in various stages of development with potential collaborators. Goenka noted that Moon has already garnered support from Hello Meghalaya, a government-backed streaming platform, with an emphasis on gaining visibility through international festivals first. “Our goal is to connect with co-producers, sales agents, and distributors who appreciate the significance of regional cinema,” he stated.
Kurbah’s previous works include Market (2019), which offered a nuanced depiction of life on the streets of Shillong, and The Elysian Field (Ha Lyngkha Bneng), which earned accolades for best film and director at the 47th Moscow International Film Festival, showcasing his expanding global recognition.
By intertwining regional specifics with universal emotions, Moon aspires to present the landscapes and narratives of Meghalaya to an international audience. “The story is honest and deeply rooted in its land, yet it resonates with emotions that anyone can relate to. I am confident it will shine on the festival circuit,” Goenka remarked.
The 30th Busan International Film Festival is currently underway and is scheduled to conclude on September 26.
