Mizoram Celebrates 108-Year-Old Lalneihsangi as its Oldest Living Treasure
Lalneihsangi, a remarkable 108-year-old woman, has been officially recognized as the oldest living person in Mizoram, as announced by Social Welfare Minister Lalrinpuii on September 13. Affectionately known as Pi Buangi by her community, Lalneihsangi celebrated her 108th birthday on April 14. She holds the distinction of being the first Mizo to work in a rehabilitation center and has been a dedicated worker at the Behala Girls Home in Kolkata.
Born to Thangchhunga, the first Corps Sergeant Major in the Salvation Army Church of Mizoram, Lalneihsangi was honored with the ‘Women of Substance’ award in 2022 for her lifelong contributions to society. Speaking at an event in Aizawl, Minister Lalrinpuii indicated that this declaration followed a survey performed by the Social Welfare Department. She also highlighted that the state government offers various welfare initiatives, including old-age pensions for senior citizens.
Currently, Mizoram is home to over 70,000 elderly residents, and this figure is anticipated to rise to 100,000 by 2036. The minister emphasized the importance of respecting elders, stressing that this respect is central to Mizo cultural ethics.
