Bengal Govt Triumphantly Reverses Transfer of 42 Doctors Amid Fierce Protests | MorungExpress
Massive Protests Lead to Withdrawal of Doctor Transfer Order in West Bengal
Moradabad/Kolkata, August 17, 2024 (IANS): A candlelight vigil was held by doctors in Moradabad commemorating the young medic at RG Kar Medical College, Kolkata, who was recently raped and murdered. Their actions resonated with healthcare professionals nationwide.
Amidst these intense protests, West Bengal’s Health Department rescinded a notification that aimed to transfer 42 doctors from state-run medical colleges and hospitals. This decision was announced by Health Secretary Narayan Swarup Nigam, who clarified that the transfer order was unrelated to the protests.
"The transfers were planned two months ago but were delayed due to minor errors in the names. However, we’ve now withdrawn the notification to avoid any disruption in medical services," Nigam stated.
Simultaneously, the transgender community in Kolkata conducted its own protest march, demanding justice for the murdered junior doctor. This community’s demonstration underlined the broad spectrum of public outrage sparked by the heinous crime.
The transfer notification earlier led to accusations from the medical community and opposition leaders that the state government was acting vindictively. The United Doctors Front Association (UDFA) condemned the transfer as a punitive measure against doctors supporting the protests. National BJP Spokesman Shehzad Poonawalla echoed this sentiment, alleging that the transfers targeted those advocating for justice.
Protests extended beyond West Bengal, with medical professionals from Bengaluru staging their own demonstrations at Freedom Park.
The widespread dissent emphasized the collective demand for swift and just action against the perpetrators of the crime and underscored the severe backlash against any perceived governmental retaliation against advocates for justice.
