Heartbreaking Tale: Selling a Rare Fish for Just 50,000 Taka!
A heart-wrenching incident has recently surfaced, highlighting the extreme lengths to which poverty can drive people. A couple reportedly sold their infant son for just 50,000 rupees in a shocking demonstration of desperation.
This distressing case occurred in the Lesliganj area of Palamu district in Jharkhand, where the couple reached a breaking point due to their dire financial situation. Following the revelation of this incident, Chief Minister Hemant Soren took swift action, directing authorities to rescue the child immediately.
According to local administration, the father, Ramchandra Ram, originally hails from Mirzapur in Uttar Pradesh, but has been living in Lotwa village of Palamu for the past 15 years with his wife, Pinky Devi. They had moved around in search of work but were left jobless after heavy rains disrupted their daily wage labor.
In a heart-wrenching statement, Ram said, “I had no money to cover my wife’s medical expenses or to provide food for the family. That’s why I felt compelled to sell our child to a broker couple.” This couple then took the child to the neighboring district of Latehar.
Ram added, “We are homeless. We spend the night under a dilapidated shed with our four other children.” Pinky shared that her father had given them a small piece of land where they built a hut, but that too collapsed in the rain. Since then, they have been living beneath a makeshift shelter.
Reports from national media highlight that the couple had not benefited from any government welfare schemes, as they lacked an Aadhaar card or ration card. Consequently, they were deprived of crucial government assistance. According to local sources, in times of need, they resorted to begging in their village.
Following the incident coming to light, the Palamu district administration intervened, providing the family with 20 kg of food grains and initiating steps to enroll them in various government schemes.
Officer Uttam Kumar Rai from Lesliganj police station stated that a team was sent to Latehar to recover the child, and the rescue was successfully executed on Sunday. He confirmed that the child is now safe.
This tragic event underscores how extreme poverty and lack of government support can lead a family to make heart-wrenching decisions. The news has sparked outrage among local residents, highlighting the urgent need for effective social safety nets and assistance. Thanks to the prompt response from the administration and the Chief Minister’s intervention, the child was brought back to safety.
