Strengthening Regional Ties: Wangsu’s Commitment to Mithun Conservation
Arunachal Pradesh’s Animal Husbandry Minister, Gabriel D. Wangsu, highlighted the importance of regional cooperation for the conservation and development of mithun during the 3rd Mithun Day celebration held in Mizoram on September 2. Under the theme “Integrated Mithun Farming,” Wangsu emphasized that mithun is not just livestock but serves as a cultural anchor and economic backbone, symbolizing unity among the Northeastern states.
Wangsu described the mithun’s historical significance, stating, “From the snow-clad peaks of Arunachal to the lush green hills of Mizoram, the mithun has walked with us through history, providing sustenance, status, and strength.” He pointed out that Arunachal Pradesh is home to over 90% of India’s mithun population, which he believes belongs to the entire Northeastern community.
Recently, mithun received recognition from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI) as a food animal, referred to as ‘WESHI,’ and was added to the Domestic Animal Diversity Information System (DAD-IS). Wangsu noted that these recognitions pave the way for commercial farming and sustainable economic growth, marking a significant step for Northeastern states in transforming mithun rearing from a traditional practice to a viable enterprise.
Under Chief Minister Pema Khandu, the Arunachal government is modernizing mithun heritage with scientific approaches, including breeding programs, fodder innovation, healthcare systems, vaccination strategies, and farmer cooperatives. Wangsu praised the fruitful collaboration between Arunachal and the National Research Centre on Mithun, which has yielded positive results.
He also commended Mizoram’s government for its commitment to research and community-driven conservation efforts, such as pasture development, scientific rearing practices, and farmer training programs. Acknowledging challenges like climate change, dwindling grazing lands, and evolving lifestyles, Wangsu stressed the need for innovation, cross-border collaboration, and a balanced approach that merges science with tradition.
Drawing inspiration from the mithun’s ability to adapt through historical challenges, he called for embracing scientific advancements while honoring cultural traditions. Prominent figures at the event included Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma, Animal Husbandry Minister C. Lalsawivunga, as well as various scientists and farmers from the region.
Mithun Day is celebrated on a rotational basis across the Northeastern states, underscoring the shared cultural and economic significance of this cherished animal.
