Nagaland MLA Urges Urgent Review of Job Reservation Policies for Progress
Nagaland legislator Kuzholuzo (Azo) Nienu on September 2 expressed concerns during a state assembly session regarding job reservation policies, urging lawmakers to approach these matters with caution to avoid exacerbating tribal imbalances. He highlighted the need for careful consideration before implementing such policies, warning that rash decisions could create further divisions among communities.
Presenting official statistics, Nienu illustrated the disparity in employment opportunities within government services. He noted that seven tribes-Angami, Ao, Lotha, Phom, Sangtam, Sumi, and Pochury-are currently overrepresented in government jobs compared to their population sizes. Conversely, he pointed out that nine tribes-Chakhesang, Chang, Khiamniungan, Konyak, Rengma, Yimkhiung, Tikhir, and Zeliang-are significantly underrepresented, leading to an imbalance that must be addressed.
Nienu reminded his fellow lawmakers that the main objective of job reservations is to promote social justice, alleviate poverty, and ensure that all communities have equal representation in governance. He cautioned, “Before finalising any quota policy, we must assess population data, employment records, and ensure proportional representation of each tribe. A hasty decision will only worsen tensions.”
To remedy these discrepancies, Nienu recommended conducting a comprehensive survey of the tribal population and employment patterns. He argued that such a study is essential for developing a fair and inclusive reservation framework that accurately reflects the demographic and employment realities in Nagaland. This careful approach aims to foster a more equitable system that benefits all tribes in the state.
