The Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) has apprehended Rahul Vijay, a Senior Manager at the Airports Authority of India (AAI), for allegedly embezzling approximately ₹232 crore, according to a statement released by the agency on Saturday. The arrest follows a complaint from AAI, which claimed that during his tenure at Dehradun Airport, Vijay orchestrated a sophisticated scheme of fraud, manipulating both official and electronic records.
The investigation by the CBI was initiated based on AAI’s complaint. It is reported that between 2019 and 2023, Vijay created duplicate and fictitious assets and artificially inflated the value of legitimate ones, sometimes by simply adding zeros to figures, to escape detection. These fraudulent actions allegedly resulted in around ₹232 crore being diverted to his personal bank accounts.
Preliminary findings indicate that Vijay transferred large sums of the misappropriated funds into trading accounts, where he engaged in speculative transactions, thereby siphoning public money for personal use. Additionally, Vijay, who had the authority to sign AAI’s official bank accounts with the State Bank of India, is alleged to have created three distinct user IDs to facilitate dark transfers of funds.
The CBI also revealed that Vijay transferred money to an AAI contractor and simultaneously funneled funds into his own account by inflating the amounts billed for the same work. On August 28, CBI teams executed searches at his official and residential properties in Jaipur.
The raids resulted in the recovery of crucial documents, including records pertaining to immovable properties, valuable securities, and other assets believed to be tied to the alleged fraud. Following his arrest, CBI officials stated that further inquiries are ongoing to track the money trail and identify any potential co-conspirators.
