Remembering Sonaram R. Sangma: 109 Years of Legacy in Assam
Assam commemorated the legacy of Sonaram R Sangma, the first political leader from the Garo community, on his 109th death anniversary on August 27. The tribute was marked by a day-long event organized by the Sonaram R Sangma Memorial Trust Society in collaboration with the Garo Students’ Union, which emphasized Sangma’s pivotal role in advancing Garo political representation.
Assam’s Education Minister and Minister for the Welfare of Plain Tribes and Backward Classes, Dr. Ranoj Pegu, spearheaded the homage by laying floral tributes at Sangma’s statue. During the ceremony, Dr. Pegu also unveiled plans for a new auditorium in Sangma’s honor. This project, which is expected to cost around ₹1 crore, is funded by the State’s Department of Tribal Welfare.
The event attracted several notable figures, including Dr. Numal Momin, Deputy Speaker of the Assam Legislative Assembly, Tankeswar Rabha, Chief Executive Member of the Rabha Hasong Autonomous Council, former MLA Dipak Kumar Rabha, and various leaders from Garo socio-political organizations. Their presence underscored the significance of Sangma’s contributions and the ongoing efforts to honor his legacy within the Garo community and beyond.
