Bangladesh NSA Khalilur Rahman Set to Discuss Key US Relations in Doha
Bangladesh’s National Security Adviser (NSA) Khalilur Rahman is set to visit Doha, Qatar, for the second time in three months, reportedly to engage in discussions with high-ranking officials aimed at developing strategies for Rohingya-Rakhine mediation. His visit is scheduled for two days, August 28 and 29. However, officials from the Bangladesh Foreign Ministry clarified that the focus of this trip will largely be on the Rakhine State, rather than directly addressing the Rohingya issue. This comes as the Arakan Army has faced significant military challenges in its conflict with the Myanmar military junta.
In recent weeks, military actions by the junta have escalated, targeting not only the Arakan Army but also various insurgent groups throughout different regions in Myanmar. Following his trip to Doha, Khalilur Rahman will immediately head to Beijing for another two-day visit starting September 3. Officially, this visit coincides with events commemorating the 80th anniversary of Japan’s surrender. Yet, according to documents obtained by Northeast News, the primary goal is to conduct “bilateral meetings” with senior Chinese officials.
Khalilur Rahman’s previous visit to Doha on May 26 was mired in controversy concerning the contentious issue of establishing a humanitarian corridor to Rakhine State. During that trip, he took an early morning Qatar Airways flight (QR-639) for what was described as an official visit. Notably, on that occasion, US Charge d’Affaires in Dhaka, Tracey Ann Jacobson, also visited Doha before embarking on a longer trip to the United States.
This time, credible government sources indicate that Khalilur Rahman’s agenda may include meetings with US intelligence officials operating from Doha, a location that has long served as a military base for the United States.
