Experience Life with Multiple Sclerosis: Interactive Sensory Kiosks at Bengaluru Event

In a groundbreaking effort to enhance awareness about Multiple Sclerosis (MS), an interactive event titled “Walk in My Shoes” was held in Bengaluru on Friday. This initiative featured sensory simulation kiosks that aimed to help participants experience the often hidden and debilitating symptoms of MS. The event emphasized the urgent need for improved care and policy support for individuals affected by this condition, organized by Roche India in partnership with the Multiple Sclerosis Society of India (MSSI).

The simulation kiosks were designed to replicate the sensations associated with four common MS symptoms: loss of balance, motor impairment, blurry vision, and decreased sensitivity. Participants used 2 kg leg bands, a Snellen chart for vision tests, and tremor-inducing wrist straps to gain a deeper understanding of these challenges.

Rajan S., Chief Communication Officer of Roche India, noted that such initiatives foster empathy among participants towards those living with MS. Arun Moha, Vice President of MSSI, shared his own experience, stating, “When you ask me when I was diagnosed with MS, I would say 15 years officially, but in reality, it has been 30 years, and it’s almost silent suffering.” He highlighted the concerning fact that half of the people suffering from the disease are not even aware of their condition.

Mr. Moha also discussed the financial burdens faced by MS patients, stating, “An MRI scan in India alone costs ₹30,000 to ₹40,000, and I take an injection twice a month, amounting to ₹1.6 lakh a year. While this is still not a cure, it makes one feel a little better than the day before.” Issues related to various policy challenges for MS patients were raised during the event, underscoring the need for more comprehensive support systems in place.
