World Humanitarian Day 2025: Brave Aid Workers Reflect on Unprecedented Challenges and Heartbreaking Sacrifices

In a stark reflection of the ongoing humanitarian crisis in Gaza, Olga Cherevko from the UN’s Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) highlighted the unwavering commitment of aid workers despite immense challenges. Speaking to UN News on World Humanitarian Day, she described these dedicated professionals, many of whom have lost everything in the conflict, continuing to work “day in and day out” for their communities.

UN Secretary-General António Guterres echoed this sentiment, emphasizing that humanitarian teams are “the last lifeline for over 300 million people” affected by conflict and disaster. Despite their critical role, he warned that escalating funding cuts severely jeopardize the livelihoods of the world’s most vulnerable. Furthermore, Guterres condemned the increasing violence against aid workers, noting that “red lines are crossed with impunity,” even when international law expressly prohibits such attacks. He called for renewed political will and moral courage from governments to ensure that humanitarians are treated with respect and protection, asserting that they must never be targeted.

From her position in Deir Al-Balah, Cherevko expressed frustration at the impediments that hinder the delivery of aid. “I feel powerless sometimes in Gaza,” she said, lamenting the delays that prevent lifesaving missions from reaching those in need. These missions, often lasting 12 to 18 hours, frequently encounter dangerous, impassable, or inaccessible routes, further complicating their efforts to assist the population.

Recent data reveals a disturbing trend, with a 31% increase in aid worker fatalities compared to the previous year, largely attributed to the relentless conflict in Gaza. In 2024 alone, 181 humanitarian workers have been killed in the enclave, along with 60 more in Sudan. Violence against aid workers has surged across 21 countries, with state actors being the predominant perpetrators. Alarmingly, provisional data shows that 265 aid workers were killed by mid-August this year, highlighting a troubling pattern of violence that shows no sign of abating.

Amid ongoing efforts to establish a ceasefire, Cherevko stressed the urgent necessity for a permanent resolution to the conflict. “Courage alone is not going to feed people or save lives,” she emphasized. “We need political solutions and a permanent ceasefire.”

OCHA reports that most of last year’s casualties among aid workers were national staff serving their communities, who faced attacks while on duty or in their homes. In addition to the fatalities, 308 aid workers were wounded, while 125 were kidnapped and 45 detained in 2024. Tom Fletcher, the UN Emergency Relief Coordinator, reiterated the message that violence against humanitarian professionals is an affront to the entire community and those they serve. He condemned the lack of accountability surrounding such attacks, calling it a “shameful indictment of international inaction and apathy.”

World Humanitarian Day, observed annually on August 19, commemorates the 22 humanitarian workers who lost their lives in a bomb attack in Baghdad in 2003. The day reminds the global community of the importance of advocating for the safety and dignity of people affected by crises and for the protection of aid workers. This year’s theme, overseen by OCHA, calls for an end to attacks on humanitarian staff and civilians, urging those in power to “#ActForHumanity.”

As discussions around ceasefire and conflict resolution continue, the resilience of aid workers remains vital in delivering much-needed assistance to vulnerable populations amidst growing challenges.
