Rangpo Prepares for Sikkim’s Historic Aama Samman Diwas on Aug 10!
GANGTOK: The Rangpo ground is prepared to host Sikkim’s inaugural ‘Aama Samman Diwas’ on August 10, celebrating the state’s mothers. This event coincides with the eighth Jan Unmukti Diwas, a significant day for the ruling SKM party. Rural Development Minister Arun Upreti explained that while August 10 was traditionally marked as Jan Unmukti Diwas, this year it has been officially redefined to honor mothers under the guidance of Chief Minister Prem Singh Tamang (Golay) and the government’s commitment to women’s welfare.
During the celebration, over 32,000 mothers will be honored through the Sikkim Aama Sasaktikaran Yojana, with each receiving the first installment of financial assistance of Rs 40,000 distributed in two parts-the first during the event. An additional 4,200 mothers will benefit from the Sikkim Aama Sahayog Yojana, providing support for four LPG cylinder refills each year, as noted by Upreti.
Moreover, 210 grassroots-level mothers have been specially chosen for recognition at the state level. This group includes Safai Mitras, ASHA and Anganwadi workers, members of Self-Help Groups, Panchayat representatives, PWD workers, and Mid-Day Meal cooks, all selected by the Chief Minister’s Office. Upreti emphasized that these recognitions are more than symbolic-they reflect true appreciation for the commitment and hard work of mothers contributing to Sikkim’s growth.
In a noteworthy change, this year the 210 honored mothers will share the main stage with the Chief Minister, a traditional spot typically reserved for high-ranking officials. To ensure a comfortable experience for attendees, the government has established an ‘Aama Suvidha Ghar’ at the venue, complete with necessary facilities for mothers. All public restrooms will also be accessible and free, with extra sanitation arrangements to cater to the anticipated large crowd.
Minister Upreti invited all mothers and the public to join in this historic celebration, aiming to create a memorable occasion. Additionally, Namchi District Zilla Adhakshya Anjita Rajalim commented on this transformation of Jan Unmukti Diwas into Aama Samman Diwas, highlighting it as a reflection of the government’s respect for mothers. She noted that the Sikkim Aama Sasaktikaran Yojana, which offers direct financial support, is a pioneering initiative intended to empower mothers as family pillars.
Rajalim addressed criticisms labeling the event as a political spectacle, asserting that it genuinely acknowledges the roles and sacrifices of mothers, rather than serving political ends. Preparations for the celebration are in the final phase, being closely supervised by cabinet ministers, MLAs, advisors, chairpersons, Zilla Adhakshyas, and other senior officials.
