Myth, Memory, Meaning is a captivating exhibition showcasing the work of four talented contemporary women artists: Ashu Gupta, Rakhee Shenoy, Smruthi Gargi Eswar, and Sukanya Garg. Each artist presents a unique creative vision, utilizing diverse mediums such as thread, gold leaf, paper, and acrylic. These works invite viewers to engage deeply, encouraging exploration beyond the surface.

Delhi-based artist Sukanya Garg draws inspiration from her own life experiences, particularly in relation to her autoimmune condition. “When I was unwell, I started drawing cells almost subconsciously, creating simple circles with dots to symbolize them,” she explains. Initially, this repetitive action served as a soothing distraction; however, it eventually evolved into a broader artistic style. Over nearly a decade, Garg’s journey led her to alternative healing practices, including Kambo, a folk remedy from the Amazon that involves cauterization to cleanse the body. Her latest pieces at Artisera, incorporating gold pen and gold leaf, echo this healing philosophy. This exhibition features 19 works from Garg, who transitioned from a career in economics to the art world as a result of her health challenges.

Bengaluru’s Smriti Gargi Eswar, recognized for her impactful series Sister Misfortune centered on goddesses, also presents new work at Myth, Memory, Meaning. Her pieces belong to a fresh series titled The Centre is Everywhere. “These works delve into how geometrical shapes converge towards a center,” Smriti shares. “In cosmology, there’s no singular center in the universe; similarly, in mythology, there isn’t a singular God, but rather multiple heroes and narratives.” This ideology inspires her to illuminate lesser-known mythologies within Indian epics. While she has experimented with various artistic techniques, Smriti employs acrylic on canvas to create a dynamic interplay between mythical figures and geometric forms.

The exhibition, open until August 16 at Artisera, offers free entry daily, though visitors must make an appointment for Sunday visits. This immersive showcase not only highlights the distinct approaches of each artist but also emphasizes the intricate dialogue between contemporary art and mythological themes, inviting viewers to reflect on their connections to personal and collective narratives.
