IndiGo Prohibits Passenger for Assaulting Co-Traveller on Flight
IndiGo Airlines has banned a passenger from flying after he violently slapped a co-traveller on a Mumbai-Kolkata flight. The altercation occurred on flight 6E138 on August 1, as the plane was en route to Kolkata. Upon landing, the disruptive individual was taken into custody by airport security and classified as unruly.
In a statement on X, IndiGo confirmed it had notified the appropriate authorities following a comprehensive review of the situation. The airline emphasized that the ban is part of its ongoing efforts to mitigate unruly conduct on flights but did not specify the duration of the ban.
The airline stated, “In line with our commitment to discourage such unruly behaviour onboard flights, the individual has been suspended from flying on any IndiGo flights, in accordance with regulatory provisions.” A video shared on social media depicted the incident, showing a seated passenger suddenly striking another man standing in the aisle. Following the slap, the victim was seen in tears and was relocated to another seat.
In the footage, a cabin crew member is heard admonishing the seated passenger with “don’t do that,” while other passengers questioned the rationale behind the assault, emphasizing that he had no right to hit anyone. Another voice in the background indicated that the victim was experiencing a panic attack.
Aishwarya Sagar, the Divisional Deputy Commissioner of Police (Airport Division), reported that both passengers were arrested under Section 170 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS), aimed at preventing serious offences, and under Section 120, which allows for binding offenders to court if they threaten public peace. The repercussions for unruly behaviour on flights vary, potentially leading to a ban lasting from three months to two years, depending on the severity of the incident.
