Unyielding Voices: Kolkata Protests Demand Justice for RG Kar Victim Outside CBI Office

Protests erupted outside the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) office in Kolkata on August 1, 2025, as demonstrators called for justice for the RG Kar victim. This year marks a significant milestone, with August 9 approaching as the one-year anniversary of the tragic crime. The victim’s parents and advocates are increasingly frustrated by the lack of progress in the investigation.

The demonstration, organized by Abhaya Mancha-a forum established to seek justice for the RG Kar victim-and the Joint Platform of Doctors, highlighted growing concerns over the CBI’s handling of the case. Protesters expressed their discontent over the agency’s failure to file a supplementary chargesheet nearly a year after the crime, with only one arrest made so far. As a poignant symbol of their demands, participants tied brooms outside the CBI’s gates, chanting protest songs that called for justice for the victim, commonly referred to as Abhaya. The brooms represented a desire to “clean out corruption” from the CBI, encouraging transparency and accountability.

Abhaya’s father voiced his concerns, mentioning that the other two individuals arrested-Sandip Ghosh, the former principal of RG Kar, and Abhijit Mondal, a former officer-in-charge of the Tala police station-were granted bail after the CBI failed to produce a chargesheet within the required 90-day period. Both individuals were detained for allegedly obstructing the investigation and delaying the filing of the initial FIR. “We doubt if they will ever file a supplementary chargesheet. They claim to be investigating a larger conspiracy, but I fear I won’t be alive to see any resolution,” he stated in an interview with The Hindu.

Dr. Subarna Goswami, a member of Abhaya Mancha and a central figure in the protests, emphasized that the CBI’s failure is emblematic of a broader issue within societal structures. “This is not an isolated incident; it reflects a larger fascist structure that perpetuates violence against women. The state uses its resources to protect criminals, leaving victims’ families in despair,” she remarked. The pervasive sense of impunity, Dr. Goswami elaborated, discourages public outcry, effectively silencing protests over time.

The family has previously expressed frustration with the ongoing investigation, stressing that a civic volunteer, Sanjay Roy, who has been sentenced to life imprisonment for the rape and murder, is not the sole perpetrator. The cries for justice have only intensified since the horrific incident, which saw a postgraduate female trainee doctor found dead in a seminar hall of the RG Kar Medical College and Hospital on August 9, 2024. The brutal details of the crime have sparked outrage across the nation, igniting significant protests and mobilizing citizens to demand accountability.

As the one-year mark approaches, the pressure mounts on the CBI and law enforcement agencies to act decisively. The tragedy of the RG Kar victim resonates with many, serving as a stark reminder of the urgent need for justice and effective action against violence toward women in society. The protests signify a collective refusal to let this case be forgotten, urging authorities to fulfill their mandate in delivering justice.
