Assam CM to Unveil BJP’s Bold Campaign for BTC Polls on August 2
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma will kick off the Bharatiya Janata Party’s campaign for the Bodoland Territorial Council (BTC) elections on August 2, with public rallies set to take place in Udalguri district. The elections are expected to occur in September. This election signifies a new direction for the BJP, which has opted to contest independently, contrasting with its 2020 alliance with the United People’s Party Liberal (UPPL) to establish the council government.
Kishore Upadhyay, the Chief Spokesperson for the Assam State BJP, stated, “BJP will contest in the upcoming BTC election alone and the party’s preparations are in full swing.” Sarma is set to campaign across the 40 BTC constituencies; however, the BJP plans to field candidates in 38, deliberately leaving two seats vacant. Upadhyay explained, “By giving respect to two Bodo leaders Pramod Boro and former BTC chief Hagrama Mohilary, we will not contest in two seats.”
In addition to CM Sarma, Union Minister Sarbananda Sonowal and State BJP President Dilip Saikia will also engage with voters during the campaign trail. The decision to pursue a solo campaign strategy was made during a recent high-level meeting at the state BJP headquarters in Guwahati, reflecting the party’s increasing confidence and commitment to strengthening its foothold in the Bodoland region.
Following the recent publication of draft electoral rolls by the Assam State Election Commission, a total of 2,669,396 voters have been registered for the 40 BTC constituencies, comprising 1,329,742 males, 1,339,637 females, and 17 individuals classified as others. Voting will take place at 3,277 polling stations.
The BTC is vital for managing the Bodoland Territorial Region (BTR), which includes four districts-Kokrajhar, Baksa, Chirang, and Udalguri-home to a significant Bodo populace. Political analysts regard the upcoming BTC elections as a crucial indicator for regional players as they prepare for the 2026 Assam Assembly elections.
