Unveiled: The Heartbreaking Truth Behind Asian Visitors to Japan Falling Short-A Shocking Manga Prediction!

Visitor interest in Japan has taken a sharp decline, particularly in June, following a viral prophecy from a manga predicting a “disaster” in July 2025. This forecast emerged from the 2021 reprint of “Watashi ga Mita Mirai, Kanzenban” (“The Future That I Saw, Complete Edition”) by renowned artist Ryo Tatsuki. The original edition, released in 1999, ominously foretold a catastrophe in March 2011-an event that sadly came to fruition with the devastating Great Tohoku Earthquake, which claimed nearly 20,000 lives and triggered the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster.

The narrative around the manga’s prediction has spread widely, particularly in Hong Kong, where it gained traction across mainstream media channels and through popular YouTube influencers. According to data from Japan’s National Tourism Organization, arrivals from Hong Kong dropped by a staggering 33.4% in June, following an earlier 11.2% decrease in May. CN Yuen, managing director of the Hong Kong-based travel agency WWPKG, revealed that his agency has experienced a 50% reduction in bookings and inquiries for Japan compared to the same period last year.

Other Asian markets showed similar trends. In South Korea, tourist arrivals increased by only 3.8% in June, down from 11.8% in May. Taiwan reflected an even more dramatic slowdown, with growth plummeting from 15.5% in May to just 1.8% in June. Although the average number of overseas visitors to Japan surged by 24% from January to May, arrivals in June saw only a modest 7.6% rise.

Yuen noted that while travel declines usually follow natural disasters, this situation is unique as it stems from mere rumor rather than real events. “This is the first time we’ve seen such an incident,” he told CNBC, reflecting on the unusual nature of the reaction. Meanwhile, Hong Kong airlines have reportedly cut flights to several Japanese cities, including Nagoya.

Adding to the apprehension, a report from Japan’s Asahi Shimbun highlighted a warning from the Headquarters for Earthquake Research Promotion, stating that the likelihood of a megaquake in the next three decades has risen to 80%. This warning, coupled with the manga prophecy, has combined to create a “perfect storm” deterring potential visitors, according to Yuen. However, Japan’s Meteorological Agency cautioned that predictions do not guarantee actual events, indicating that elevated risks do not necessarily mean a disaster is imminent.

Interestingly, Asian tourists appear to be more affected than their Western counterparts. Data from the Japan National Tourism Organization (JNTO) shows that the proportion of Asian visitors dropped year-on-year in June, while arrivals from Western countries increased. Experts attribute this discrepancy partly to cultural factors, noting the prominent role of manga in Asian societies. Zimbayah Kamble, a senior lecturer at James Cook University, emphasized that such narratives resonate strongly in the region due to historical context and Japan’s seismic vulnerability.

Kiattipoom Kiatkawsin, an associate professor from the Singapore Institute of Management, pointed out that the swift circulation of rumors on social media creates a sense of amplified risk within collectivist cultures. This leads to widespread behavioral changes, including travel cancellations, even among skeptics. The ease of canceling flights and accommodations has also made potential travelers less hesitant to defer their plans, with many holding onto the idea that they can easily reschedule for a later time.

Despite the current downturn, Kiatkawsin remains optimistic that the manga-related prediction will not have a long-lasting impact on Japan’s travel industry, as concerns appear confined to July.
