Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi: Is PM Modi’s Obsession with Nehru Healthy?
Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi has sharply criticized Prime Minister Narendra Modi for what he describes as an obsession with India’s first Prime Minister, Jawaharlal Nehru. Gogoi’s comments came after Modi announced on Tuesday that his government had suspended the Indus Waters Treaty, calling it corrective action for a “big blunder” made by Nehru’s administration. During a lengthy 19-hour debate in the Lok Sabha regarding Operation Sindoor, Modi branded the signing of this treaty with Pakistan in 1960 as a significant betrayal of India’s dignity.
Modi stated, “It has been an old habit of the Congress to mortgage India’s interests. The biggest example of this is the Indus Waters Treaty. Who signed this treaty? Nehru did it and granted rights to 80 percent of the waters of the rivers originating in India and flowing to Pakistan.” His remarks drew protests from Congress members present in the session.
In a post on X, Gogoi responded to Modi’s comments, asserting that the Prime Minister failed to mention China or former U.S. President Donald Trump during his lengthy address. He emphasized that no matter how long Modi spoke, it would not undermine Nehru’s legacy and contributions to the nation.
Additionally, Gogoi criticized the government for recent security lapses, particularly highlighting the attack on pilgrims in Pahalgam. He drew parallels with past terror incidents, stating, “People of India know that the security failure of Pahalgam, just like Pulwama, Uri, Pathankot, and Manipur, lie solely on the shoulders of PM Modi and Home Minister Amit Shah.”
These exchanges reflect the increasing political tensions between the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and opposition leaders concerning national security, foreign policy, and historical narratives.
