CM Himanta Biswa Sarma’s Urgent Visit to Uriamghat: Tackling Encroachment Issues
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma recently visited the proposed eviction site in Uriamghat, where he voiced significant concerns regarding the escalating illegal activities in the area. “Locals have informed me that Uriamghat has become a hotspot for drug peddling, motorcycle theft, and even illegal arms,” CM Sarma stated, describing the encroached land as a burgeoning center for criminal activities.
Arriving by helicopter in Vidyapur, close to the Assam-Nagaland border, the Chief Minister conducted an aerial survey using drones. This revealed extensive betel nut plantations on forest land, which are allegedly encroached. Expressing his anxiety over the situation’s severity, he remarked, “The list of encroachers is so long that I’m not sure I can clear them all, even if I remain Chief Minister for my entire life.”
According to him, settlers in Uriamghat hail from multiple districts of Assam, including Cachar, Sribhumi, Dhubri, Barpeta, Nagaon, Hojai, and Morigaon, as well as migrants from Bihar. He indicated that the district administration would undertake verification of each settler’s identity, stating, “We’ll collect names and addresses. If they’re truly from these districts, there’s no problem. But if they’re not permanent residents, they will be evicted.”
Eviction notices have already been issued by the district administration. However, upon the Chief Minister’s arrival, several alleged encroachers converged, seeking a meeting to discuss compensation, security, and rehabilitation. Tensions escalated when some women attempted to breach the police barricade to meet him, leading to brief confrontations with law enforcement.
The situation eventually stabilized after officials assured genuine residents that they would receive necessary support, including rehabilitation. CM Sarma reassured law-abiding citizens that they had no reason for concern. This eviction effort in Uriamghat is part of a broader initiative within Assam to reclaim forest and government land. Given its sensitive location along the state border and the presence of suspected outsiders, it remains a high-priority concern.
Reports of encroachment have also surfaced in Guwahati’s Adingiri Hills, where illegal settlers have named the area “Kudratpur.” Eviction notices have also been served to those involved in this encroachment.
