Shibulal and Kumari Ignite a Cultural Renaissance: Transforming South Bengaluru with a New Artistic Haven
In a significant development for the arts community in South Bengaluru, a new cultural center dedicated to theatre, Indian classical music, dance, and folk arts is set to launch in just 18 months. Named Sangamam India, this initiative is spearheaded by the Shibulal Family Philanthropic Initiatives (SFPI) and will provide a 20,000 square-foot space for performances, exhibitions, and training in J.P. Nagar.
S.D. Shibulal, co-founder of Infosys and SFPI, emphasized the necessity of such a venue, stating, “It is high time our city, especially the south of Bengaluru, had a dedicated space for all kinds of art forms, music, culture, and theatre, including stand-up comedies.” This new facility will not only host artistic performances but will also serve as a teaching and mentoring hub, unifying various art forms under one roof.
The three-story building will include an auditorium with a seating capacity of 270, an exhibition hall, and a dedicated space for training and mentoring on the third floor, all complemented by ample parking facilities. Kumari Shibulal expressed her belief in the power of music and the arts to unite people: “Music and other art forms can bring people together and create a common platform that transcends boundaries and differences.” She shared that her and Shibulal’s passion for Indian classical music inspired them to establish Sangamam India a few years ago.
Founded in 2022, Sangamam India aims to promote the rich tapestry of India’s cultural heritage while fostering awareness and preservation of various art forms. The organization has successfully hosted two major events biannually, alongside monthly programs featuring both national and local artists.
Currently, Sangamam conducts its events at various auditoriums across the city, steadily bringing exceptional talent to the forefront and creating a vibrant artistic atmosphere. Shibulal and Kumari envision that Sangamam will play a crucial role in reviving and celebrating India’s artistic treasures, bridging the gap between past and present, and fostering a spirit of learning and respect among artists, artisans, and audiences alike.
As the plans for the cultural center unfold, the Shibulals remain committed to creating a space that not only showcases the diverse art forms of India but also nurtures and educates future generations. This initiative aligns with the growing demand for cultural spaces that cater to a wide array of artistic expressions, resonating with the community’s desire for cultural enrichment in Bengaluru.
With its focus on Indian classical music and various art forms, Sangamam India promises to be a beacon of creativity, cultural exchange, and education in the heart of Bengaluru. As the building project progresses, the impact of this cultural hub is anticipated to extend well beyond its walls, enriching the local community and preserving India’s artistic legacy for years to come.
