On Thursday, Mohan Bhagwat, the head of the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), met with top religious leaders of the Muslim community. The meeting aimed to address several misconceptions that have emerged recently between Hindus and Muslims. Leaders from both faiths asserted that mutual discussions could help resolve these issues.
The meeting took place at Haryana Bhavan in Delhi and lasted for around three and a half hours. Both parties expressed the need for regular dialogue between Hindu and Muslim communities.
Organized by the All India Imam Organization (AIIIO), the meeting was led by Maulana Umar Ahmed Elahi. He stated, “The discussion revolves around national issues, mutual trust, and unity. It is the only way to clear misunderstandings, end hatred, and build relations based on mutual respect and cooperation.”
Approximately 60 prominent Muslim religious leaders, scholars, and heads of various madrasas were present. Mohan Bhagwat, along with senior RSS leaders Dr. Krishna Gopal and Indresh Kumar, also attended the meeting.
At the end of the meeting, Sunil Ambekar, head of the RSS’s national publicity and media department, remarked, “We want to move the country forward with everyone. The discussion was very positive.”
Key focuses of the meeting included fostering understanding and respect between temples and mosques, encouraging cultural exchanges and discussions among imams and worshippers, establishing educational and social ties between madrasas and gurukuls, promoting peace and unity through religious discourse, and emphasizing a joint stance against the politics of hatred and division.
Elahi emphasized, “We believe that if fraternity is to be established in Indian society, it must begin from temples and mosques. If the message of peace is promoted there, it will change people’s mindset. People pay attention to religious ceremonies and directives. Hence, imams will carry the message of harmony, and students will be taught the principles of brotherhood in madrasa curricula.”
The gathering has been positively received by various segments of society. Political and intellectual circles believe it could strengthen India’s pluralistic culture.
