Assam Rifles Uncover Massive Meth Bust Worth Rs 14 Crore in Tripura
Agartala, July 22: In a significant operation, the Assam Rifles, in collaboration with Customs officials, seized methamphetamine tablets valued at Rs 14 crore and apprehended a truck driver in the Khowai district of Tripura, officials reported on Tuesday. The operation occurred late Monday night at Tuchandrai Bazar, where personnel intercepted a truck and discovered 1.4 lakh methamphetamine tablets after conducting a thorough inspection.
The contraband, along with the arrested driver, was transferred to the Customs Department for further investigation and legal proceedings. A defense spokesperson emphasized that the Assam Rifles, in partnership with various enforcement agencies, is dedicated to combating illegal activities and ensuring safety and security in the region.
This seizure marks the second significant drug bust by the Assam Rifles in Tripura within a week. On July 16, a joint operation with the Tripura Police led to the interception of another truck at Khayerpur in West Tripura, resulting in the confiscation of three lakh methamphetamine tablets worth Rs 30 crore. In that instance, however, the driver managed to escape. Authorities suspect that these drugs, commonly referred to as Yaba or party tablets, were smuggled from Myanmar through Mizoram and southern Assam before entering Tripura and being destined for Bangladesh.
Methamphetamine, available in tablet, powder, or crystalline forms-often called ice or crystal meth-is a stimulant known to suppress the need for sleep and is commonly used by young adults and partygoers. Myanmar’s Chin State has emerged as a notorious hub for drug trafficking and other illegal activities. Smuggling routes frequently traverse six districts in Mizoram-Champhai, Siaha, Lawngtlai, Hnahthial, Saitual, and Serchhip-all sharing extensive, unfenced borders with Myanmar and Bangladesh.
Tripura’s Chief Minister, who also oversees the Home portfolio, recently cautioned that numerous influential individuals are implicated in the drug trade for profit but assured that anyone caught will face consequences. At a ‘Drug-Free India Campaign’ event in West Tripura last week, he underscored the vigilance of law enforcement in preventing the state from becoming a corridor for narcotics trafficking.
