Urgent: MLAs’ Future at Risk as Delimitation Alters Election Map
Guwahati: Several sitting BJP MLAs in Assam face the possibility of losing their election tickets for the state assembly elections scheduled for early next year. This shift comes after the delimitation process, completed two years ago, led to the dissolution of several constituencies and the creation of new ones. Following a two-day “Chintan Baithak” with 51 party leaders, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma stated, “Not all sitting MLAs can be granted tickets, and many may choose to step aside voluntarily. Given the changes in constituencies, new candidates will be introduced, especially with the increase in Scheduled Caste (SC) and Scheduled Tribe (ST) seats.”
The 2023 delimitation exercise has expanded the number of SC constituencies from eight to nine and ST seats from 16 to 19. Notably, in the West Karbi Anglong district, the autonomous regions gained an additional seat, while the Bodoland Territorial Region increased its representation from 11 to 15 seats. Baithalangso (ST), previously the only seat in West Karbi Anglong, has been replaced by two new constituencies: Rongkhang (ST) and Amri (ST).
Sarma emphasized that the party is open to fresh candidates, although decisions on the exact number of new faces will be made later. “Many campaign activities will commence after Independence Day, at which point we will evaluate the performance of the current MLAs,” he explained. This assessment will scrutinize how government schemes have been implemented across each assembly constituency and consider other relevant factors before finalizing candidacies.
During the “Chintan Baithak,” detailed discussions also took place regarding the election manifesto, candidate selection, campaign strategies, and key issues that will shape the narratives during the election period. The CM noted that feedback from the senior party members will guide both the BJP’s central committee and state leadership in maintaining a structured election process.
Addressing the coalition with the BJP’s key ally in the state, the Asom Gana Parishad (AGP), Sarma stated there is no practical reason to end the alliance. “The AGP has been allied with the BJP since 2014, and this partnership will continue. While there may be challenges concerning ticket allocation, some individuals will receive tickets while others will not,” he remarked.
