Empowering Future Filmmakers: ‘Hello Meghalaya’ & IFTI Unite for Growth
Shillong: The Indian Film and Television Institute (IFTI) of Arunachal Pradesh recently concluded a three-week film exchange program in collaboration with ‘Hello Meghalaya,’ the state-owned over-the-top (OTT) platform. The event, which celebrated storytelling, regional culture, and creative collaboration, brought together 30 emerging filmmakers from across India, particularly focusing on participants from Meghalaya and supported by the state government.
According to an IFTI statement, “Hello Meghalaya” is committed to fostering local talent by amplifying regional content and creating opportunities through initiatives like this exchange. Launched just a year ago, the platform has quickly become a transformative space for filmmakers and artists from Meghalaya.
The program was designed by the screenplay department of IFTI and paired its students with participants from Meghalaya. Working in mixed groups, these teams collaborated to develop, shoot, and edit short fiction films grounded in the region’s rich soundscapes, folklore, and natural environment.
Under the guidance of esteemed filmmakers such as Pradip Kurbah, Dominic Sangma, Jules Basaiawmoit, and Kitkupar Shanpliang, each group produced a short film between five to seven minutes long, themed “Stories in the Mist: Music, Myths, and Soundscapes of Shillong.” Cyril V Diengdoh, executive director of The Meghalayan Age Ltd, praised the impressive quality and depth of the films created in such a short timeframe, highlighting how visually they captured the essence of Meghalaya’s landscapes, weather, and music.
Diengdoh characterized the partnership between IFTI and “Hello Meghalaya” as a meaningful convergence of vision, sincerity, and dedication to filmmaking. He also spoke about the burgeoning creative ecosystem in the state, which not only empowers artists but contributes to a wider creative economy.
Filmmaker Dominic Sangma emphasized that this initiative aims to cultivate an “ecosystem of creativity, collaboration, and diversity” in Meghalaya. “Hello Meghalaya,” officially launched on July 11, 2024, seeks to celebrate the vibrant culture, stories, and talents of the region.
