Positive Shifts in India-China Relations: A New Era of Cooperation
Beijing: External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar stated on Monday that the India-China relationship has shown a gradual improvement since the meeting between Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Chinese President Xi Jinping in Kazan in October 2024. During his opening remarks at a meeting with Chinese Foreign Minister Wang Yi, Jaishankar emphasized the need for a long-term approach to their bilateral ties. He noted, “Our responsibility is to maintain that momentum.”
Jaishankar highlighted the positive progress made over the past nine months towards normalizing relations, attributing this to resolved border tensions and the maintenance of peace and stability. “This is the fundamental basis for mutual strategic trust and the smooth development of bilateral relations,” he remarked, stressing the importance of addressing other border-related issues, including de-escalation.
This visit marks Jaishankar’s first trip to China since the violent clashes in Galwan Valley in May 2020, where he is attending the Shanghai Cooperation Organization (SCO) Foreign Ministers’ Meeting in Tianjin. He congratulated China on its successful presidency of the SCO and noted that both countries have had multiple opportunities for strategic communication at international events recently.
Looking ahead, Jaishankar expressed optimism about future meetings and India’s commitment to achieving favorable outcomes. He expressed hope for more regular bilateral engagements in each other’s countries. Additionally, he thanked China for its cooperation in resuming the Kailash Manasarovar Yatra after a five-year hiatus.
