Imphal West District Takes Strong Action Against Illegal Roadside Encroachments
The District Administration of Imphal West, in collaboration with security forces and district revenue officials, conducted an eviction drive on Saturday to remove unauthorized structures and encroachments along public roads and footpaths. This initiative was spearheaded by Mayanglambam Rajkumar Singh, the Deputy Commissioner of Imphal West District.
The drive was initiated in response to an order issued by the Deputy Commissioner on July 4, 2025, addressing the unauthorized occupancy of public spaces. Such encroachments have been a significant inconvenience to the public, obstructing traffic flow and posing safety hazards to commuters.
Deputy Commissioner Singh expressed his dismay over the rampant misuse of public infrastructure, especially footpaths, which have been illegally appropriated for business and personal use. Despite serving multiple eviction notices in 2022, 2024, and early 2025, as well as the recent notice on July 4, the illegal occupancy continued, necessitating action from district authorities.
Encroachers were granted a deadline of July 11, 2025, to vacate voluntarily. However, since compliance was not met, the District Administration initiated the eviction process starting from the Keishampat to Malom stretch. Singh indicated that similar eviction drives would soon take place in other locations, including the Uripok stretch.
Furthermore, the Deputy Commissioner announced that the costs associated with the removal of dismantled structures and debris would be charged to the owners, and formal notices would be issued. If these charges remain unpaid within 10 days, penal actions will follow. He urged the public to support the District Administration’s efforts in preserving public infrastructure, such as roads, bridges, and drainage systems, for the collective benefit of the community.
K Jadumani Singh, Additional Deputy Commissioner of Imphal West District, who was also present during the drive, reiterated the mission to eliminate illegal encroachments and unauthorized extensions of structures along the roads and footpaths. He emphasized that the prior eviction notices had made it clear that such obstructions must be removed.
He pointed out that the accumulation of construction materials, wires, and tires, along with the erection of unauthorized business structures, impeded public mobility and negatively impacted law and order. During this eviction operation, numerous illegal constructions, including signboards, tin sheds, and street stalls, were demolished and removed.
It is important to note that the earlier order from the Deputy Commissioner required encroachers to dismantle all illegal structures, debris, and unauthorized items along National Highways, State Highways, Inter-District Roads, Inter-Village Roads, and other public pathways in Imphal West by 3 p.m. on July 11, 2025.
