Landslide Disrupts Train Services in Dima Hasao; Job Seekers Stranded
Train services on the Lumding-Badarpur Hill section were severely disrupted late Sunday night due to a landslide between Mupa and Dihakho stations in Dima Hasao district. Several passenger trains are stranded at various stations along this route, which is approximately 44 kilometers from Haflong, the district headquarters. As a result of the incident, the Northeast Frontier Railway has been forced to cancel, partially cancel, or reschedule at least ten trains operating in the area.
The Lumding-Badarpur section, known for its fragile hill slopes, has experienced multiple disruptions since June 23, sparking concerns regarding the long-term viability of rail operations in the region. This latest landslide follows a significant event on June 23 between Jatinga Lampur and New Haflong that halted traffic for nearly a week. Although train services resumed on June 30 after repairs, another landslide near Mupa on July 3 once again crippled operations. Services briefly resumed on July 5, only to be halted again due to heavy rains that triggered the current landslide.
In a statement, officials from the Northeast Frontier Railway confirmed that track clearance efforts are in progress. Help desks have been set up at key stations, including Kamakhya, Guwahati, Lumding, New Haflong, Badarpur, Silchar, and Agartala, with food arrangements for affected passengers.
These frequent landslides are significantly impacting connectivity to Barak Valley and disrupting crucial rail links to Tripura, Mizoram, and parts of Manipur. Officials recognize the toll these repeated disruptions have taken on both infrastructure and passengers. Among those most adversely affected are job seekers from Barak Valley who are set to attend GNM and ANM interviews under the Directorate of Medical Education on Tuesday. With trains canceled and limited alternative transportation options available, many are uncertain about their ability to reach examination venues on time.
“This is not just a transportation issue — it’s a question of career for hundreds of candidates,” said a parent of one aspirant. As monsoon rains continue to affect the region, there are increasing calls for a sustainable long-term solution to protect this vital hill section against recurring natural hazards.
