Meghalaya Revamps Skills Mission: Empowering 23,000 Candidates for Future

The Meghalaya government has introduced a revamped skills development initiative aimed at training over 23,000 individuals across critical economic sectors, signaling a major shift towards employment-focused programs. On Friday, the Meghalaya State Skill Development Society wrapped up a four-day workshop at the Institute of Hotel Management in New Shillong. During the event, 119 local training providers from 86 institutions received strategic direction and work orders as part of the revitalized CM Skills Mission.

Principal Secretary Challienkhum Songate hailed the training providers as “change makers of society,” highlighting their vital role in aligning educational initiatives with the economic objectives of the state for the fiscal year 2025-26. This new mission marks a departure from previous strategies, emphasizing three main goals: enhancing training quality for national competitiveness, broadening the scope of skill development programs, and promoting institutional integration to achieve sustainable results.

Executive Director Jagdish Chelani presented certificates and memorandums of understanding to 17 training providers, while 65 organizations were granted work orders to commence operations without delay. The initiative targets essential sectors such as agriculture and food processing, tourism and hospitality, apparel and textiles, and construction-fields identified as having significant employment potential within Meghalaya.

Training providers are tasked with pinpointing skill gaps at both block and village levels, implementing targeted support for youth, and ensuring that the programs address local livelihood needs while also aligning with global market trends. The workshop included comprehensive panel discussions and sector-specific meetings aimed at creating systemic improvements, including clarified institutional roles, stronger financial integration, and actionable frameworks for program planning.

Officials stated that the initiative’s success will be assessed based on actual employment outcomes rather than merely tracking training completion rates, illustrating a broader transformation in the state’s approach to skill development. This initiative is particularly crucial as Meghalaya seeks to enhance its workforce and decrease youth unemployment, especially in rural areas where conventional job opportunities remain scarce.
