Bilawal Bhutto’s Bold Statement on Masood Azhar Sparks Controversy
In a controversial statement, Pakistani politician Bilawal Bhutto Zardari has claimed that Islamabad does not know the whereabouts of Jaish-e-Mohammed chief Masood Azhar, who is one of India’s most wanted terrorists. Azhar has been linked to multiple attacks against India, including the 2001 Parliament attack, the 26/11 Mumbai attacks, the 2016 Pathankot attack, and the 2019 Pulwama attack. He was designated a global terrorist by the United Nations in 2019 and was released in 1999 in exchange for hostages during the Kandahar hijacking of Indian Airlines flight IC-814.
Recently, Azhar reportedly lost ten family members and four aides during Operation Sindoor, in which India targeted key terrorist bases, including the headquarters of Lashkar-e-Taiba in Muridke and Jaish-e-Mohammed in Bahawalpur. During an interview, Bhutto expressed that Pakistan would be “happy to” arrest Azhar if India could provide information confirming that he is on Pakistani soil. He referenced Hafiz Saeed, another terrorist, asserting that he is not free in Pakistan, suggesting that Azhar might be in Afghanistan.
Bhutto further commented on the complexities surrounding Azhar’s potential location, stating, “If he is in Afghanistan, the West has now handed over to a group they once labeled terrorists, and who now lead Afghanistan. It’s unrealistic for Pakistan to achieve what NATO could not within Afghanistan. There’s no reason for Pakistan to seek out this individual or anyone else of concern.” This statement underscores the ongoing tension surrounding terrorist activities in the region and the challenges faced by Pakistan and India in addressing these issues.
