Surge of Muslim and Hindu Populations: Key Countries to Watch
Population dynamics significantly influence social, cultural, and political landscapes, particularly in relation to religious groups. A recent Pew Research Center report highlights noteworthy changes in Europe’s religious demographics between 2010 and 2020. The total Christian population in Europe dropped by approximately 8.8%, now totaling about 505 million. Meanwhile, the Jewish population fell by 8% to around 1.3 million. In contrast, nearly all other major religious demographics saw growth, most notably the group identifying with no religion, which surged from 130 million to 190 million, reaching 37% of the population.
The Muslim population in Europe also experienced a significant increase, growing to approximately 46 million from 39.3 million-a rise of 15.9%. Additionally, the small Hindu population grew by 30%, reaching about 2 million. This shift has altered the shares of religious groups within Europe dramatically, with the Christian demographic now constituting 67% of the population, a decline of eight percentage points. Conversely, the share of religiously unaffiliated individuals grew by seven percentage points to 25%. Other major religions experienced less than a one-point change over the decade.
The period was marked by substantial immigration from Muslim-majority countries, particularly due to the influx of refugees from conflict zones like Syria. Consequently, the Muslim share of Europe’s population rose by about 1%, now making up around 6% of the total population. Sweden saw the most pronounced increase, with the Muslim population doubling from 4% to 8%. In Albania, where Muslims are already the majority, their share increased by 4%, and Germany recorded a rise of 1%, now at 7%. These shifts not only reflect increased immigration but also the more progressive immigration policies adopted by several nations, such as Sweden and Germany under Angela Merkel.
The implications of these demographic changes are profound, affecting everything from social policy to cultural dialogue, and raise pivotal questions about identity and integration across Europe.
