India’s Deep Ocean Mission: Exciting Sea Trials Set for Early 2026
Union Minister Dr. Jitendra Singh announced on Monday that the first phase of India’s Deep Ocean Mission is on schedule for sea trials by early 2026. By 2027, India aspires to establish a strong presence beneath the ocean surface, utilizing indigenous technology, during a meeting with Puducherry Lieutenant Governor K. Kailashnathan.
The meeting focused on formulating a comprehensive action plan for coastal cleaning, establishing a permanent coastal management mechanism, exploring seabed minerals, and promoting deep-sea fishing under the Deep Ocean Mission. Dr. Singh stated that the mission aims to revolutionize how India manages its marine resources, fostering economic growth while ensuring environmental sustainability. He emphasized the necessity of assessing how Puducherry’s coastal zones can effectively generate revenue and create local employment, particularly through regulated deep-sea fishing and marine research.
Dr. Singh praised the collaboration between India’s space and ocean research initiatives and called for this innovative spirit to extend to coastal states and union territories such as Puducherry. He expressed confidence in the willingness of the Puducherry administration to collaborate on these national missions.
The meeting aimed to harness Puducherry’s coastal resources for sustainable development and long-term economic benefits. Dr. Singh raised concerns regarding the ongoing issue of coastal erosion in Puducherry, noting that previous initiatives, including the ‘Swachh Sagar, Surakshit Sagar’ campaign, yielded positive outcomes, yet a structured and continuous approach is now essential.
“A permanent mechanism for beach cleaning and coastal management must be established. The Ministry of Earth Sciences will provide necessary guidance and coordinate with the Puducherry Chief Secretary to implement this,” he stated. He highlighted Puducherry’s strategic location along the eastern coastline and its potential in bolstering India’s marine economy.
Dr. Singh remarked that the Deep Ocean Mission presents new opportunities for deep-sea fishing and seabed exploration for critical minerals like polymetallic nodules. “These resources could significantly enhance India’s technological capabilities and its position in the global marine economy,” he concluded.
