Shocking Supreme Court Challenges Suspension of Tamil Nadu ADGP Jayaram: Arrest Order Raises Serious Concerns
The Supreme Court today raised concerns regarding the suspension of H.M. Jayaram, the Additional Director General of Police (ADGP) of Tamil Nadu, amid allegations linked to an abduction case. During the hearing on June 18, a bench comprising Justices Ujjal Bhuyan and Manmohan questioned the necessity of Jayaram’s suspension, especially since he has cooperated with the ongoing investigation.
The scrutiny came in response to a petition from Jayaram challenging a decision from the Madras High Court, which had controversially directed his arrest while considering an anticipatory bail plea filed by KV Kuppam MLA “Poovai” Jagan Moorthy. The High Court’s actions, which surprised many, raised eyebrows given Jayaram’s significant experience of 28 years in the police force.
Jayaram was arrested on June 16 and subsequently released on June 17 after intervention by the Supreme Court. Despite his release, he remained suspended. His counsel highlighted that the High Court’s directive was unfounded since Jayaram was not a party to the bail request. In response, state counsel argued that Jayaram’s suspension was justified due to the ongoing investigations, although Justice Bhuyan remarked, “You can’t do this. This is very demoralising.”
The Supreme Court bench insisted on clarity regarding the suspension order. Justice Bhuyan emphasized that if Jayaram was already cooperating with the authorities, there was no rationale for his suspension. “You obtain instructions to withdraw the suspension order; he’s a senior police officer,” he advised the state counsel. Justice Manmohan, joining the discourse, remarked humorously on his long tenure, stating, “I never knew I had this power [to direct an arrest].”
At the heart of the case is an abduction complaint filed by Lakshmi against an individual related to an alleged marital dispute. Lakshmi’s son wedded a girl without approval from her family, leading to alleged actions from the girl’s kin and others that resulted in the abduction of her younger son, aged 18. Reports claim the young man was found injured, and there are allegations connecting the incident to an official vehicle linked to Jayaram and purported conspiracies involving the MLA.
Justice P. Velmurugan of the High Court directed law enforcement to address these serious allegations against Jayaram, underscoring that, as a public servant, he remains accountable to the community. The judge pointed out the necessity of reinforcing public confidence by demonstrating that no individual is above the law.
The Supreme Court has scheduled another hearing for tomorrow, seeking updates on whether the suspension order against Jayaram will be rescinded, as the ongoing legal proceedings continue to draw significant public and media attention.
