Joha Rice’s Global Expansion: Exciting New Market in Dubai!
Dibrugarh: Assam’s esteemed Joha paddy has achieved a significant milestone with its first major export to Dubai. On Sunday, state water resources minister Pijush Hazarika inaugurated the shipment of a 10-tonne consignment from Demow in the Sivasagar district, marking a notable advancement in the state’s agricultural export sector. This paddy, cultivated by local farmers in Nitaipukhuri and Demow, reflects the rising international demand for Assam’s indigenous crops. Joha rice, a fragrant variety exclusive to the region, is celebrated for its unique aroma, delicate flavor, and small grain size. Cultivated mainly in the Brahmaputra Valley, it plays an essential role in Assamese cuisine, often served in traditional festive dishes such as Pitha, Payokh, and Jolpan.
In addition to its culinary importance, Joha rice is recognized for its health benefits, featuring a low glycemic index and antioxidant properties, making it a sought-after health food. During the flag-off ceremony, Minister Hazarika expressed pride in the export, stating, “The shipment of Joha paddy to Dubai showcases the global recognition of Assam’s agricultural heritage. Our farmers have nurtured this traditional variety for generations, and now the world will experience its uniqueness. With the Middle Eastern market appreciating specialty rice and a significant Indian expatriate community, this presents a promising opportunity for Joha rice to make its mark internationally.”
Thowra constituency MLA Sushanta Borgohain, who attended the event along with district agriculture officials, underscored the economic potential of this initiative. He noted, “Global demand for premium, aromatic rice is increasing, and Joha rice is well-positioned to compete at the highest level. By connecting our local produce to international markets, we are enhancing farmers’ income while promoting sustainable agriculture.”
Farmers from Nitaipukhuri and Demow expressed optimism about this new venture. “We have been growing Joha paddy using traditional methods handed down through generations. Seeing our produce reach global markets gives us hope for better prices and recognition for our efforts,” said Prabhat Gogoi, a farmer from Nitaipukhuri. The export was facilitated by the Jyoti Agricultural Service Group in Sivasagar, with support from the Department of Agriculture and the Assam Agribusiness & Rural Transformation Project.
