Urgent Call: Pradyot Debbarma Demands Immediate Border Closure to Protect Tripura Amid Bangladesh Crisis
Amid escalating unrest in neighboring Bangladesh, TIPRA Motha chief Pradyot Debbarma has called for stringent measures to prevent the influx of refugees into India. The situation in Bangladesh has become increasingly unstable following Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina’s resignation, raising alarms across northeastern Indian states, especially Tripura.
Debbarma highlighted the potential dangers of opening India’s borders during this period of turmoil. “Allowing refugees to cross into Northeast India could jeopardize our future and survival,” he cautioned. He urged the Indian government to safeguard the indigenous populations by providing land rights, economic empowerment, and constitutional protections.
The unrest in Bangladesh remains severe, with significant protests erupting in Chittagong over the weekend. Thousands of Hindus demonstrated, demanding protection and an end to the ethnic persecution of religious minorities. The protesters advocated for the creation of a ministry and a commission for minorities, as well as a 10% reservation in the new government’s legislature.
In addition, the North East Students Organisation (NESO), which represents student bodies across the northeastern states, has insisted on the total closure of borders with Bangladesh. NESO leaders expressed fears that a refugee influx could endanger the culture and livelihoods of the region’s indigenous communities.
This volatile situation underscores the urgent need for a coordinated response from the Indian government to address the potential refugee crisis while ensuring the protection and empowerment of the indigenous people in the affected regions.
