Assam Flood Recap: 9,000 Affected as Waters Slowly Recede
The flood situation in Assam has shown slight improvement; however, thousands of residents in Lakhimpur, Hailakandi, Cachar, and Kamrup (Metro) are still struggling with the aftermath. According to the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA), around 9,385 individuals are currently affected by the floodwaters. Lakhimpur faces the most significant impact, with 5,422 people in distress, while Hailakandi reports 3,945 affected residents. Additionally, Katigorah in Cachar and Chandrapur in Kamrup (Metro) experienced severe devastation.
This disaster has led to not only displacement but also substantial agricultural damage, with 395 hectares of farmland still underwater. This raises concerns about potential crop losses as the monsoon season advances. Tragically, the floods have taken 22 lives across the state this year, highlighting the deadly effects of seasonal disasters, a recurring struggle for Assam.
In light of the ongoing crisis, relief efforts are in full swing. Local administrations are actively monitoring embankments, river levels, and vital infrastructure to prevent further damage. The situation remains precarious as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued new forecasts predicting moderate rainfall across Mizoram and light to moderate showers in isolated regions of Assam, Meghalaya, and Tripura. Scattered rain is also anticipated in parts of Arunachal Pradesh, Manipur, and Nagaland. Thunderstorms with lightning and gusty winds, ranging from 30 to 40 km/h, are expected in parts of Assam, Meghalaya, and Tripura, while specific areas in Mizoram may see heavy rainfall.
Despite the rainfall, conditions in the Northeast remain uncomfortable, with maximum temperatures expected to stay 3 to 5 degrees Celsius above normal, resulting in hot and humid weather. In Guwahati, the forecast suggests a partly cloudy sky with potential rain or thundershowers, and temperatures likely fluctuating between 35°C and 27°C.
