Madhya Pradesh police have revealed a complex timeline surrounding the case of Sonam Raghuvanshi, who allegedly plotted her husband’s murder just days after their wedding. Sonam, 24, returned to Indore shortly after the killing of her husband, Raja Raghuvanshi, 28, in Meghalaya. She reportedly met her alleged accomplice in a rented room before resurfacing disoriented at a roadside dhaba in Eastern Uttar Pradesh. Police have stated that Sonam had claimed she was abducted, but investigators believe she was never in danger.
On May 23, Sonam and Raja embarked on what appeared to be a spontaneous honeymoon to the Wei Sawdong Falls in East Khasi Hills. Shortly after, on June 2, Raja’s body was discovered in a gorge near the falls. Sonam remained missing until June 9, when she was found in Ghazipur, raising questions about her disappearance. Indore police assert that she returned to Indore between May 25 and May 27, where she met Raj Kushwaha, a co-accused, who subsequently arranged for her transportation to Uttar Pradesh.
Despite Sonam’s claims of being abducted, authorities believe her actions indicate a deliberate attempt to mislead investigators. “We have information indicating that she strategically navigated her route to confuse us,” stated Rajesh Dandotiya, Additional DCP (Crime Branch). Upon arriving at the Ghazipur One-Stop Centre, where she sought refuge, she reportedly slept for seven of her fifteen hours, declined medical assistance, and repeatedly stated, “Mujhe kuch yaad nahi hai” (I don’t remember anything). Authorities allege that Sonam was involved in a conspiracy to kill Raja soon after their wedding. The plot allegedly began on May 17, just six days into their marriage. After temporarily returning to her parental home, Sonam reestablished contact with Kushwaha through a different SIM card. On May 16, police believe they had a lengthy conversation that enabled planning. The following day, Kushwaha met with three childhood friends-Akash Rajput, Vishal Singh Chauhan, and Anand Kurmi-where they supposedly discussed the murder plan.
The group traveled to Meghalaya, stalking the couple from May 21 onward. According to police reports, Sonam used her location to lure Raja to secluded areas before the assault. Initial attempts to eliminate him by pushing him off a cliff were unsuccessful, leading to a fatal attack with a machete purchased in Guwahati, which she allegedly witnessed.
