Addressing Meghalaya’s Education Crisis: Urgent Reforms Needed Now
The State Planning Board of Meghalaya has raised serious concerns regarding the state’s positioning at the bottom of the Ministry of Education’s Performance Grading Index (PGI) for the 2021-22 academic year. During a recent review meeting with the Education Department, Metbah Lyngdoh, Chairman of the Planning Board, reflected on Shillong’s historical status as an educational hub, but noted that significant changes over time have negatively impacted Meghalaya’s ranking in the PGI.
“It is a matter of concern,” Lyngdoh stated, emphasizing the need for those in leadership positions to acknowledge the issues and take appropriate measures. He mentioned that the Education Department has already begun taking steps to revise its policies to address these challenges.
During the discussions, Lyngdoh expressed alarm over the salary disparities between different categories of school teachers, highlighting that some educators receive varying salaries despite teaching the same syllabus. He pointed out that deficit and semi-government teachers earn Rs 70,000 per month, while teachers under the Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan (SSA) receive only Rs 21,000, deeming this situation as unfair.
Moreover, Lyngdoh addressed the government’s ambitious initiative to take control of all schools in the state, describing the transition as a daunting task. He noted that a substantial 57% of teachers in Meghalaya are untrained, which poses a significant challenge to the education system.
During the meeting, the Planning Board received information regarding the proposed Meghalaya Education Grant from the Education Department. Lyngdoh described the governmental model being put forward as encouraging, and he recalled the government’s commitment to involve all stakeholders before making a final decision on the matter.
