Assam Flood Crisis: Over 3.37 Lakh Still Affected Despite Relief Efforts
Assam experienced a slight alleviation in flood conditions on Saturday, June 7, as reported by the Assam State Disaster Management Authority (ASDMA). The number of affected individuals decreased to 337,000 across 12 districts, down from 443,000 the previous day. However, the death toll has unfortunately risen to 17, with a new fatality reported in Kamrup (Metro) on Saturday. Despite some regions benefiting from receding waters, significant destruction remains, particularly in the districts of Sribhumi, Hailakandi, and Cachar.
Sribhumi district is the hardest hit, with 193,244 individuals suffering from the floods. Hailakandi follows with 73,724 affected residents, while Cachar has reported 56,398 individuals impacted. Other districts, including Nagaon, Kamrup, Morigaon, Goalpara, Darrang, Lakhimpur, Biswanath, Kamrup (Metro), and Golaghat, continue to encounter challenges.
Rivers, such as the Brahmaputra at Dhubri, Kopili at Dharamtul, Barak at B.P. Ghat, and Kushiyara at Sribhumi, remain above danger levels, compounding difficulties in low-lying regions and posing ongoing threats to local communities.
In response to the crisis, authorities have intensified relief efforts in the most affected areas. Sribhumi has set up 53 relief camps, while Cachar has established 115 camps. Additionally, relief centers are operational in Biswanath, Morigaon, Hailakandi, and Nagaon to support those in need.
In Morigaon, the Public Health Engineering department installed five hand tube wells and distributed chemical packets and informational leaflets to facilitate access to safe drinking water. Meanwhile, the Assam Power Distribution Company Limited reported damage to 16 electric poles, three transformers, and 11.5 kilometers of power lines in North Lakhimpur.
The Veterinary Department in Sribhumi has delivered 300 quintals of rice bran to livestock owners in areas such as Asimganj, Kanaibazar, Jurbari, Kabaribond, and Faridkuna, demonstrating a commitment to alleviating the impact on agriculture and local livelihoods.
Urban areas are also facing challenges, with flash floods in Kamrup and Darrang affecting 657 residents. Numerous municipal wards in Kamrup remain submerged. Landslides have been reported in Dima Hasao and Kamrup (Metro), displacing residents, including 34 individuals who are now in relief camps in Dispur. The death toll from landslides has reached six.
Despite the decrease in the number of affected individuals, extensive regions of Assam continue to deal with the aftermath of flooding and landslides. With several rivers still flowing above danger levels and significant damage to vital infrastructure and agriculture, ongoing relief and rehabilitation efforts across the state are essential.
