Russia’s Fierce Commitment: Vows to Respond to Ukraine’s Bold Operation Spider’s Web Attack ‘When It Sees Fit’

The Kremlin announced on Thursday that Russia would respond to Ukraine’s recent military actions whenever its forces deemed it necessary, condemning Kyiv for alleged acts of state terrorism. Dmitry Peskov, the Kremlin spokesman, revealed that President Vladimir Putin conveyed to former U.S. President Donald Trump that Moscow felt obligated to retaliate.

Over the weekend, Ukraine intensified its offensive by launching drone strikes against Russian heavy bombers at airbases in Siberia and the far north. Additionally, Russia accused Ukraine of conducting explosions on rail bridges in southern Russia, resulting in the tragic deaths of seven individuals. Peskov referred to remarks made by President Putin, who labeled the Kyiv regime as a “terrorist regime” for supposedly orchestrating the sabotage of a passenger train, describing it as “terrorism at the state level.” However, Russia has not yet provided evidence linking Ukrainian officials to these rail attacks, and Kyiv has denied any involvement.

The recent Ukrainian incursions into Russian territory, paired with ongoing Russian airstrikes and ground offensives, have exacerbated the conflict that reignited in February 2022. These developments have further deteriorated hopes for peace negotiations, which both sides had resumed last month in Turkey. Despite the rising tensions, Peskov emphasized that Putin supports Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov’s position on maintaining working-level discussions with Ukraine.

When asked about the prospect of a face-to-face meeting between Putin and Trump during their recent conversation, Peskov stated that while such a discussion did not occur, both leaders recognized the importance of arranging a meeting in the future. There was no conversation regarding the potential lifting of sanctions on Russia.

In a related military development, Ukraine conducted Operation Spider’s Web, a covert drone attack on June 1, targeting significant Russian airbases. This operation, executed by the Ukrainian Security Service (SBU), reportedly led to the destruction of over 40 bomber planes used in assaults against Kyiv. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky noted that this extensive operation required 18 months and nine days of careful planning.

The operations, referred to metaphorically as a “spider’s web,” involve a series of coordinated strikes deep into Russian territory, aimed at critical military infrastructure such as airbases and transportation networks. As Ukrainian attacks within Russia continue, they are met with relentless Russian airstrikes and territorial advances, intensifying a war that began nearly two years ago and further complicating the already fragile prospects for peace talks that were recently resumed in Turkey.

The resurgence of military actions on both sides serves as a stark reminder of the ongoing conflict’s volatility, with potential ramifications not just for Russia and Ukraine but for international stability as well. As tensions heighten, the global community remains watchful, hoping for a resolution to a crisis that has already displaced millions and strained international relations.
